Radiographs performed:
-Left radius fracture appears healed with a good amount of callus present and no evidence of instability at this time.

Assessment: 2021-203 appears to have a healed Left radius with no current signs of instability. The radius palpates as a solid bone with mild thickening at the site of the healed fracture. Patient has significant pectoral atrophy most likely resultant from extensive cage rest during fracture healing. At this time the patient will be moved to a flight aviary to start regaining use of the wing and pectoral muscles. Carpal bumper has been removed accordingly. 2021-203 tolerated anesthesia well with an average heart rate of 220 and respiratory rate of 30 and no complications upon recovery.

Assessment: 2021-203 has been regularly unwilling to eat full rations provided, regularly 50% or more of food is remaining. This coupled with significant weight loss noted over the last week lead us to believe that trying different dietary options may be beneficial. Whole fish will be offered to try to encourage better appetite and Meloxicam will be discontinued to further try to stimulate appetite. Because fish does not provide full nutritional value, this will be supplemented with Vitamin E paste (100mg/kg of the offered fish)

Assessment: 203 was taken out to assess range of motion and determine if physical therapy needed to be continued. She had full range of motion and no instability of the radial fracture, so physical therapy was not performed. A figure 8 wrap was deemed unecessary at this time. 203 remains in a left carpal bumper to protect the abrasion on the left carpus.

2021-203 was anesthetized with facemask isoflurane for passive range of motion physical therapy. Heart rate was 160 and respiratory rate was 20 prior to anesthesia. The figure 8 wrap was removed and PROM was performed until full range of motion was achieved. There was a small lesion approximately 2cm in diameter on the left carpus that was granulated, so a carpal bumper was placed on the left wing. The figure 8 bandage was not replaced because 203 is in an outdoor mew and the weather prevents us from keeping the bandage dry. In order to prevent a bacterial skin infection or moist dermatitis we decided to leave the wing unwrapped with just a carpal bumper. The left radius fracture is not completely healed but there is a fibrous callus over the fracture site. Radiographs would be indicated for confirmation of healing. 2021-203 recovered uneventfully from anesthesia.

Patient was anesthetized with facemask isoflurane for PROM physical therapy of the left wing. The radius was palpated and a fibrous callus was noted at the fracture site. PROM of motion was performed for 5 minutes until nearly full range of motion was achieved. The figure 8 wrap was placed on the left wing and 203 recovered from anesthesia with no complications.

A superficial wound was appreciated at the point of the carpus and cleaned with saline and a bandage applied.

Re-examined patient. HR 220 at rest, able to stand on own although still mildly ataxic. Anesthetized with isoflurane via facemask. Removed figure 8 wrap, fibrous callus palpable over left radius. Measured ROM and performed 5 minutes of PT, replaced figure 8 wrap.

Due to improved HR and neurologic status, recommend discontinuing atropine at this time and monitoring. Continue twice weekly bandanage changes and PT with meloxicam.

Communication from Bob Sargent on Events of Rescue of BAEA.

On Tuesday, July 20 11:15 am, I received several calls from Jefferson County about an injured Bald Eagle. One call was from Jefferson County Sheriffs Office and I spoke with Deputy Joseph Holshauser (may not be correct spelling), who was on-scene with the eagle. The eagle was laying on its belly in the ditch on the side of GA Hwy 296 outside of Louisville between 3232 Hwy 296, Stapleton, Georgia and Cason Creek Rd. I called a personal contact, Larry Hodges, who lives nearby and has experience as a falconer working with raptors. Larry told me that the eagle had state or federal bands on both its legs. He picked up the eagle and transported it to St Francis Animal Hospital in Augusta about 2 pm Tuesday, July 20. Jamie at St Francis called about 3 pm Tuesday, July 21 with an update on the eagle and said it had a broken left wing and they could not provide any additional rehabilitation services. He said they had checked a website for information on the leg bands and the eagle was banded as a juvenile in Florida in 2018. Lee Taylor (GA WRD Regional Supervisor) reached out to Bob Sargent (GA WRD Wildlife Conservation Section Program Manager) for rehabilitator recommendations. Per Dr. Sargents recommendation, Rob Martin (GA WRD Wildlife Technician) picked up the eagle from St Francis Animal Hospital and transported it to Vonda Morton in Dublin, Georgia yesterday.
